"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
"Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."
These Scriptures are very familiar to many.
The questions are, do you know the Truth? And are you free indeed?
Before you answer let’s talk it through.
Truth is not being right or wrong, it is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God. This seems to be progressive. The more truth you know the more you become free. Notice that is all comes through the Son.
There is a theme throughout this website and blog series, Healing.
I am not talking about healing a scab that is visible for everyone to see. I am talking about deep wounds that have infected every part of your life and are draining you of precious energy, joy, strength, happiness and the abundant life that God has promised you. The wounds that no one can see visibly but they seem to be with you whether you are alone or in a crowded room.
The first principle is that Freedom is a Choice. Every person has a freewill choice to be free or stay in the same state they are in because of various emotional events in their lives. It starts with the choice.
After the choice is made, then we take an inventory. As challenging as it may be taking inventory or simply put, making a list of the emotional events or circumstances that have kept you from living the life God has for you is very important. If this is overwhelming for you, I suggest you do this with a trusted pastor, minister, friend or you could reach out and I can help.
You see friend, we cannot move forward while constantly looking back. If you find yourself continually going back to a challenging emotional time in your life in your thoughts and emotions, you need to be set free. Most especially if you have developed a way to cope with these emotions through food, drugs, alcohol, pornography, cigarettes, cutting or any form of self-medicating. You CAN BE SET FREE!
This includes everyone, especially if you are in ministry already. Please, for the sake of the people you are trying to reach, please, finally deal with the root of emotional events so that you can minister freely.
After taking inventory, the first thing you do is choose to forgive and ask the Lord to remove the heavy burden, heal your heart and set you free. I know this sounds very simple. It is simple because our Heavenly Father knows you are hurting, and His heart is to set you free to live for Him.
However, I am not saying that fixes everything instantaneously. If that was true, we would all be free. So how do you become free indeed?
Know the truth. God’s Word is Truth.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
This means that as you read the Word of God it is doing the work in your soul (your mind, will and emotions) to help you separate that part of you that you are struggling with to get to the spiritual part of you which has to do with God’s intended will for you.
Notice the last part of the verse, “a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
So, God know what you are thinking about and how it is affecting the intentions of your heart. Wow! What an amazing God we serve.
Many people attend church weekly but do not spend any time in His Word. This is also why many need help because we go to other places for help besides the One who created us and knows all about us.
Some places to start if you do not have a consistent daily time in God’s Word.
For Comfort – Psalms (23, 90, 91, 119)
For Wisdom – Proverbs
Learn about the life of Christ – John or any of the other Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke)
Before you begin to read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you to understand what you are reading.
Consistency is very important! I started out with this resource called 7 Minutes with God. The link will provide a downloadable .pdf. This is a great way to start a Daily Quiet Time with the Lord and be consistent in your relationship with Him. It’s not quantity that counts it’s quality. God wants our whole heart not a checklist of how much we do. In my personal life I started with 7 minutes and as I did this consistently, it created a great desire within me to study His Word more to learn more about Him. As a result, I began studying the Word for 15 minutes and progressed to an hour and at times it is more than that at one time. I did not realize it at the time, but this also helped me to overcome many of the emotional events that had taken place in my own life. As I looked into the Word of God, the Holy Spirit would seemingly have a Scripture jump off the page that would go down deep into my wounded soul. Over time, I struggled less and less until I was free from the emotional events that at one time daily controlled my habits, thoughts, emotions and physical activities.
What does freedom do? Here are some definitions to help you get the picture.
Free – Strong’s Concordance #G1659 – to make free, set at liberty: from the dominion of sin, to liberate from bondage, that we might be possessors of freedom.
Free – Dictionary
to relieve or rid of what restrains, confines, restricts, or embarrasses;
relieved from or lacking something and especially something unpleasant or burdensome; not bound, confined, or detained by force; capable of moving or turning in any direction; liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another
FREE from burdens and bondage! I am guessing this sounds good to you.
The Word of God will renew your mind and the Holy Spirit will help you with understanding.
Remember it is the Son who makes you free. Jesus is the way, the Truth and the life. Many people talk about God without acknowledging His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus makes you free because He paid the price on Calvary for the dominion of sin and bondage to be broken off of your life. He paid the ultimate price for your freedom and that is why the Word of God says, “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” The word indeed means in reality. It is driving home the point that you will absolutely, truly be free because of the Son.
So, to recap:
Freedom is a Choice
Take Inventory – a list of emotional events
Stop looking back
Forgive others as He has forgiven you
Lay down the heavy burden
7 Minutes with God – Daily Quiet Time
Find FREEDOM IN THE SON
One final thought. When you do become set free there is a principle that is important.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Bondage - In scripture, spiritual subjection to sin and corrupt passions, or to the yoke of the ceremonial law
Jesus can make you free. It will be for you to stay free by making a decision; not to go back to the thoughts, habits, emotions and activities that first caused you to go into bondage. In other words, you may have to change some friends or hangouts to keep your freedom.
I am a living witness that when you become free you never want to go back!
