13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 16:13-16 NKJV
In these verses Jesus is speaking to His disciples, those who were walking the closest with Him on earth.
Simon Peter answered correctly that He is the Son of the Living God. In keeping with the subject of healing, why is this important? It has to do with the principle of Lordship.
Today there are many different voices around us including voices within us of past emotional events. These voices try to keep you from being close to the Lord. These voices may be working through depression, anxiety, frustration, drugs, alcohol, pornography, food addiction or anything else that speaks to you daily louder than the voice of the Lord in your life, screaming for you to take some action that is robbing you of peace, joy, love and wholeness.
Lordship is being willing to release the emotional pain, discomfort and effects of the past in order to daily be in tune with the Lord and what He wants and has planned for your life; so that NOTHING stands between you and your relationship with Him. It is not His will that the circumstances that were a result of man’s actions would continue to hold you in captivity. It is His will that you have a life free of the things that have held you for so long. How does this happen?
First, you make an intentional decision. This is the most challenging step for most people because they have lived with and in this condition for so long. The decision is to turn over every area of your life to the Lord. This starts by spending Daily time with Him in His Word.
For many who don’t know how to start or have never studied the Word of
God on your own, I started with 7 Minutes with God. This started a hunger in me to get to know God as my Father, my Lord, my Creator, my Savior and so much more!
For those new to study of the Word of God, I suggest starting with the book of John to get acquainted with the Life of Jesus. Psalms are wonderful for comfort and Proverbs is the book of Wisdom. Start by reading a few Scriptures a day and allow the Holy Spirit to increase your hunger.
The voice that should speak the loudest in our lives is the Holy Spirit leading us to be made whole, leading us to make Him Lord in every area of our lives. This is a journey of a lifetime. You will learn more and more about the wonderful benefits of being His child and the things that He has prepared for you! His heart is for you to have a full and abundant life.
One verse comes to mind regarding the different ways that He can be Lord in our lives:
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
I usually hear it said like this, Wonderful Counselor as if there is not a distinction between the two. Notice that there is a comma between the two words. Each of these titles for our LORD is what we all need at some point in life.
Wonderful – exciting wonder, marvelous, astonishing, unusually good
Counselor – a person who gives advice, purpose, plan
Mighty God – Mighty is strong, powerful, extraordinary, very, extremely.
Everlasting Father – He is your Father for eternity! FOREVER! He will not ever leave you nor forsake you regardless if you have an earthly Father in your life or not.
Prince of Peace – Peace is completeness, soundness, welfare, peace, safety, quiet, tranquility, contentment. The Hebrew word is shalom.
This is only one verse of Scripture. As you can see, by allowing Him access to every area of your life, He can and will be Lord to you in these ways.
Lordship happens over time. Spending time with Him and being led by the Holy Spirit. You may feel as though you need to stop doing some things, stop going certain places or being around certain people. These are ways you know you are beginning to make Him Lord.
You will never hear me say “it’s easy.” Over time, I have made many changes and choices in my life that at first seemed to be very challenging and even a sacrifice. Later, I could see that the Lord was leading me to choose my relationship with Him over the things or people I held on to. I want to be very clear that most of these choices were to stop behavior that was dysfunctional or morally wrong so that I would be in obedience to the Word of God and the will of God for my life.
Your relationship with God is personal and unique. He will never speak anything to you that goes against His Word. I encourage you today to not only develop your relationship with the Lord in a deeper way but also seek to make Him Lord in every area of your life so that you can be made whole and He can get all of the glory.
